NCI-ICBP Summer Fellowship
National Cancer Institute/Integrative Cancer Biology ProgramSummer Cancer Research Fellowship Program
The National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Integrative Cancer Biology Program (ICBP) offers a unique 9 week Summer Cancer Research Fellowship program for eligible undergraduates in their sophomore or junior years of study. The ICBP, composed of nine multidisciplinary centers across the United States, focuses on the analysis of cancer as a complex biological system. Researchers within each ICBP center utilize the integration of experimental biology with mathematical and computational modeling to gain new insights into the biology and possible management of cancer.
Selected student participants will be paired with an ICBP faculty-mentor from a participating center based on the students' indicated research interests. Through mentored research projects and/or laboratory work, faculty lectures, seminars, discussions and other activities, the nine students will gain an understanding and appreciation of major questions currently under investigation as well as the novel approaches being used within the ICBP Centers.
The Duke ICBP, under the direction of Joseph Nevins, PhD and housed within the Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy, is focused on the development of experimental and computation methods to achieve a better understanding of the genes and pathways that result in cancer, specifically the gene regulatory mechanisms controlling cellular proliferation and the link with decisions of cell fate. Within this context, our work addresses the use of genome-scale measures of gene expression achieved with DNA microarray analysis to study the function of these signaling pathways.of human cancers, including the prediction of clinical outcomes, and then link these more precise phenotypes with the action of oncogenic signaling pathways.
Each year, at least one undergraduate student will be selected as the Duke ICBP Summer Fellow. Participation in the 9 week program will be centered around a faculty mentored research project. In addition, the fellow will join IGSP/NSF Summer Fellowship Program activities, including: weekly lunch-lectures with faculty, science career dinners, IGSP seminars, student research discussions, planned social activities, a genome ethics retreat, and research presentations.
See the IGSP/NSF Summer Fellowships website to see last year's schedule of activities.
Additional program information and application materials are available at the NCI/ICBP website.
